At Smiley Dental Garland, Dr. Lynh Pham and our team are pleased to offer orthodontic care for our patients in Dallas, Texas and the surrounding areas. While wearing braces to align your smile, you will want to take extra care of your pearly whites to prevent plaque which leads to tooth decay, especially because braces, wires, springs and rubber bands are magnets for food particles and plaque.

While wearing braces, it is important to brush after eating, whether it be a meal or snack. In addition to maintaining diligent brushing and flossing, you may want to include a fluoride mouthwash as it can reach places in the mouth that your toothbrush can’t. Using an oral irrigator can be a great tool while wearing braces as it can also reach places a toothbrush can’t.

Brushing – brush with a soft toothbrush, brushing downwards from the top, and then up from the bottom. Do this with each tooth which has braces, using an interdental toothbrush. Don’t forget to replace the toothbrush when the bristles begin to fray.

Flossing – place the short end of your floss through the space between the main arch wire and the upper section of your tooth nearest the gum. Gently work the floss on the sides of the two teeth the floss is between.  There are also threader flosses that are designed to maneuver under and around your wires if you prefer.

Mouthwash – finish up with an anticavity-fluoride mouthwash that can rinse away loosened particles and oral debris and also kill any lingering bacteria.
