At Smiley Dental Garland, Dr. Lynh Pham offers traditional metal and ceramic braces for our patients in Dallas, Texas looking for a straighter smile.

Wearing braces is one of the most effective ways to correct a crooked smile and align your bite. But did you know that a straighter smile is also good for your gum health? It’s true! When your pearly whites are aligned correctly, healthy gum tissue fits more securely around them, protecting the roots of the tooth. This helps to keep gum disease at bay.

Another benefit of wearing braces is that once they are on, they are on for the duration of the treatment period. This gives you peace of mind because you don’t have to think about wearing them, as you do when putting removable aligners on to straighten your smile. Wearing removable aligners requires both discipline and commitment, because it can be tempting to remove them more than the recommended time. While braces and aligners are both effective at correcting smiles, they only work when the appliances are in place.

Wearing metal or ceramic braces does require taking good care of your teeth and gums. You will want to pay attention to brushing, flossing and rinsing daily, especially after eating. Even without braces, if you don’t clean your teeth well every day, you will invite tooth decay, gum disease, bad breath, mouth sores and bleeding gums.

We encourage our patients who wear braces to consider using an electric toothbrush to make brushing easier, and using an oral irrigator to reach around the brackets and wires for those who have a hard time flossing. These tools can be your best friends while aligning your smile.
